Music's not just for fun!
Music is something that's in everyone's life. It wakes us up in the morning, accompanies our journey to work, changes the atmosphere at a party and reminds us of the key milestones of our lives. How often have you heard a song and remembered where you were when that was in the charts? (For me, Seal's Kiss from a Rose will always be the A169 across the Yorkshire Moors in 1994!) Listening to music is great fun and playing it is even more so.
Picking up an instrument, taking those first tentative steps and starting to make music of your own is great fun - and hugely rewarding when your hard work starts to pay off - but did you you know that music is really good for you too?
Over the next few blogs, I'll be sharing some of the ways that music can help you - mind and body. It's the reason I set up Cantiamo! Life has thrown some pretty difficult things my way over the last few years, but being able to listen to and make music has strengthened my resolve, cleared my head, comforted me, drawn me closer to good friends and generally got me through. For me, after a hard day, there's nothing better than an hour spent singing or with my flute - or just bashing away at the piano. But it's not quite as simple as that - scientists have been working hard on finding out why music has such a positive effect on our lives - and the results are fascinating.
Cantiamo's aim is to encourage more people to give music-making a go and experience the incredible effects for themselves. Whether that's singing in your office or community group or taking things more seriously and learning to sing or play yourself, I'm here to help. And, I have to say, it's an absolute privilege to be able to set people onto that journey and see them start to feel the effects for themselves. What a great job I have!
